Right or wrong, the thought is that passing the radiology boards is hard enough for people who scored 230 or 240 on Step 1, and programs simply don't want the extra risk or worry of their residents failing the boards. They know they'll get a good enough match list even without those applicants. They get so many applicants that it's just not possible to review that many applications, and that's an easy way to narrow the list. Many of the higher tier programs (I'm thinking top 20, top 30) will simply filter you out based on the score. I know there’s still step 2 ck, and I will do EVERYTHING in my power to kick ass but let’s be honest: do PDs actually care about step 2?ĭoes anyone have any inspiring stories, or advice for an underdog like myself? I know step 1 doesn’t define who I am or how good a physician I will be but it sucks that I now feel like I don’t stand a chance in my desired specialty. I’ve tried to think of alternative specialties because I don’t feel confident especially when the average step 1 score of DR applicants is 240, but I keep circling back to radiology. There is nothing special about my grades or step 1. I shadowed both IR and DR docs and I remember thinking “that’s so cool- I want to do this too, I want to be like them!” I’ve been interested in rads since I was a premed. To say I am devastated would be an understatement. 2 weeks ago I received my step 1 score and got a crappy 217.
